When Can You Preload GTA 6, and How Big Is the Download?

Pixel Wizard 6 min read

Grand Theft Auto VI preloads start Tuesday, November 10, 2026, and you will need up to 212 GB of free space. Digital pre-orders on PlayStation 5 unlock the download at midnight local time, Xbox Series X|S owners get it at 12 a.m. GMT, and the game itself goes live at midnight local time on November 19. If you bought the boxed edition, note that it contains a download code rather than a disc, and those copies are expected in stores from November 12.

That is the short version. The longer version is worth your time, because Rockstar has finally answered the two questions every GTA fan has been asking for a year, and the biggest games-magazine cover story in recent memory just dropped a pile of new details about what you will actually be playing. Here is everything you need to know before November 10.

Preload dates: the full timeline

Rockstar published its official pre-load FAQ on November 3, and the schedule is now clear. Digital pre-orders on PS5 begin downloading at midnight local time on November 10. On Xbox Series X|S, pre-loading begins globally at 12 a.m. GMT on the same day, which means North American players get it a little earlier in local time. Physical copies, which Rockstar confirmed contain a download code inside the box instead of a disc, should be available from retailers starting November 12, and the code can be redeemed to preload just like a digital copy.

One important detail: preloading only downloads the files. The game stays locked until it unlocks at midnight local time on November 19, in every region, on both consoles.

How much space do you actually need?

Rockstar says the pre-load file will require up to 212 GB of available space, depending on your device. That is a ceiling, not a per-platform figure, and it is the space needed for the download itself. A store-listing tracker had earlier put the PS5 download at 210 GB, which lines up neatly with the official number.

On a base PS5 with roughly 667 GB of usable storage, a 212 GB download eats about a third of the drive. On an Xbox Series S, with around 364 GB usable, it is well over half. If you have been putting off storage housekeeping, this is the week to do it. Delete games you are not playing, move titles to an external drive where the console allows it, and leave some headroom beyond the 212 GB for a day-one patch, which Rockstar has not sized yet.

Also worth checking before Tuesday: your console needs automatic downloads enabled and to be left on or in rest mode for the preload to start on its own. On PS5, that is under Settings, then Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then Automatic Updates, with Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode switched on.

What will it cost?

The Standard Edition is listed at $79.99, with an Ultimate Edition at $99.99. The Ultimate Edition adds extra vehicles, weapons, apparel, and other in-game extras, and pre-ordering either edition also unlocks the Vintage Vice City Pack. If you are on the fence about which edition to buy, the standard version is the game itself, and everything the Ultimate Edition adds is cosmetic or in-game extras rather than story content.

The world: Leonida is enormous, and denser than ever

While Rockstar sorted out the logistics, Edge magazine published its 16-page cover feature on GTA VI in issue 430, after journalist Simon Parkin spent time at Rockstar North in Edinburgh watching co-studio head Rob Nelson play the game for about 90 minutes. The headline number: Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA V’s map, and Rockstar says its total landmass is nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA IV, GTA V, and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined.

Size alone would be a footnote if the world were empty, but Rockstar is leaning hard into density. The game reportedly has around ten times more interiors than previous GTA games, with roughly 600,000 NPC animations and individual personalities shaping how pedestrians behave. The six regions of Leonida are Vice City, the Leonida Keys, the Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park, and the whole map opens up early, so you are not gated from heading north until the story lets you.

Your Criminal Profile follows you

The most interesting new system in the Edge feature is the Criminal Profile. Instead of a simple wanted level, the game tracks how Jason and Lucia conduct themselves on a scale from Professional to Irredeemable, shown with angel and devil icons. Intimidating or knocking someone out does not push you toward the violent end the way killing does, and Rockstar says your profile influences how the story unfolds. Jason and Lucia each have their own profile, so one can play it careful while the other goes loud.

It is not a morality system in the Red Dead Redemption 2 sense. Edge is clear that you choose what kind of criminal you are, not whether you are one, and the story is about two people trying to get out of crime, with a Bonnie-and-Clyde thread running through it.

Cops who actually remember you

The police have been rebuilt around a Heat system. Officers track what they have actually seen: your description, whether you were with your partner, your clothes, the weapon you were carrying, and what CCTV caught. On-screen icons show what the police know about you, and changing clothes, splitting up, or ditching the weapon makes you harder to recognize. Wanted levels build gradually, with some leeway before they kick in, and the police bring stinger strips, radio coordination, and K9 units to the chase.

Jason and Lucia’s relationship is a system too

The bond between the two protagonists is measured on a four-level scale, and it grows when they do things together: walks, cycling, gym sessions, or just driving around. Nelson says the relationship is yours to keep or to lose as the game goes on, though he would not confirm whether the pair can get married. It is a small detail that says a lot about how personal this story is meant to feel compared to past GTA games.

What to do this weekend

  • Clear 212 GB, ideally more. Aim for 250 GB free so a day-one patch has somewhere to land.
  • Turn on auto-downloads and leave the console in rest mode on Monday night.
  • Pre-order digitally if you want the earliest preload. Physical code-in-box copies are not expected until November 12, two days after digital preload opens.
  • Check your internet plan. A 212 GB download can eat a monthly data cap in one night.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is still no PC version announced, and Rockstar has not said when one might come. For now, console players have nine days to get ready, and the clock starts Tuesday at midnight.
